Graduate Global Research Fellows

The Halle Institute for Global Research and Learning, in collaboration with Laney Graduate School, is pleased to announce the 2026 Graduate Global Research Fellows program LGS PhD students in the pre-candidacy stage. The program will fund up to twelve grants with maximum awards of $5,000/grant.

The Halle Institute Graduate Global Research Fellows program is open to students conducting research outside the United States or for transnational projects where most of the research occurs outside of the United States. Students in the pre-candidacy phase who will be applying for major grants during the 2026-27 academic year are encouraged to apply. The program is open to students from all research traditions and LGS divisions.

The funding may be used to support a research trip abroad (between four and twelve weeks) or other research activities to determine the feasibility of a PhD dissertation project, or element thereof, prior to applying for nationally or internationally competitive external funding. The grant must be used during the summer following the award.

Students accepted to the program are strongly encouraged to register for the Fall 2026 Grant Writing Seminar for Humanities and Social Sciences. This seminar will teach the fundamentals of finding funding opportunities and writing grant applications in an interdisciplinary context. Hands-on, writing-intensive workshop sessions provide the necessary scaffolding for advancing a grant proposal, so that participants can submit a dissertation research or dissertation completion fellowship application by the end of the semester.
